Once again, this only happens in Sandweiler

Following the motion tabled by the Green Party on the subject of ‘Stationnement illicite et sécurité dans l’espace public’, discussions began in the municipal council on 23 May 2025.

The opposition parties from CSV and the Green Party were of the opinion that the pavement and cycle path would contribute to safe coexistence in our municipality. Roads for cars and pavements for pedestrians – that’s how it should actually be. But this does not apply to Sandweiler.

The majority (LSAP and DP) decided to paint white stripes on the cycle path so that cars can park there with two wheels. When the two opposition parties then pointed out the safety aspect – that this would not improve safety for cyclists or pedestrians – the majority said: ‘If everyone pays a little attention, nothing will happen here.’ And it would also be safer for motorists to get out of their cars, as the car door would not extend so far onto the road.

The opposition parties were appalled by such statements, but were muzzled after further enquiry: ‘Everything has been said and we have decided so.’

Throughout the country – and far beyond its borders – local authorities are working to improve safety for their citizens by reducing speeds on the roads, whether through small islands, trees, bends or other means.

But not here in Sandweiler. Here in Sandweiler, we put the cars on the pavement and make the road wider so that drivers who don’t take speed too seriously can drive through even faster. Let’s hope that not too much happens to the children on their way to school, the pedestrians, the cyclists and the pedal scooter riders who are travelling here.

Is the Sandweiler Aldermen’s Council thinking that they too will be able to get to the town hall more quickly to work on new ideas – or rather that they will be able to leave more quickly?

Well, we don’t know…
